JRCT welcomes Claire Lauterbach, Craig Gent, Mohammed Afridi and Swee Leng Harris to advise on our grant-making

The Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust (JRCT) has welcomed four new committee members whose expertise and experience will help guide our grant-making.

Claire Lauterbach, Craig Gent, Mohammed Afridi and Swee Leng Harris have joined our Power and Accountability funding committee which supports those working for a world in which power is more equally shared and powerful institutions are accountable to wider society.

In 2023, the committee made grants totalling more than £2.7 million.

Claire, pictured below left, is an independent investigative journalist working at the intersection of national security, human rights and technology. She is a regular contributor to Declassified UK and co-directs the Spyware and Surveillance in the Telecoms Industry project at Unredacted.

Craig, pictured below second from left, is a writer, researcher and editor. He brings eleven years’ experience of working at Novara Media, where he held a variety of senior operational and editorial roles – most recently as North of England Editor – and played a leading role in growing and formalising the organisation.

Mohammed, pictured below second from right,  is the Director of Organising and a founding member of the Civic Power Fund, an intermediary funder focused on supporting grassroots community organising across the UK.

Swee Leng, pictured below right, is an independent consultant advising on legal strategies and tech policy. She is a visiting senior research fellow at The Policy Institute of King’s College London, and a member of the UK Government’s One Login Inclusion and Privacy Advisory Group.

They join other Power and Accountability 'co-optees' Alex Runswick, Brian Whelan, Sébastien A. Krier and Susan Morgan.

The committee is also formed of staff members Katharine Knox, Vicki Wilkinson and Bronny Embleton, and trustees Huw Davies and Rita Remi-Judah.
